Jake Van Horn is the Battalion Chief (BC) for A-Shift, which consists of 27 personnel, including five captains. BC Van Horn reports directly to the Deputy Chief of Operations. During assigned 24 hour periods he ensures fire, medical and other responses are handled efficiently within KFD’s defined response parameters by coordinating closely with our partner agencies and City of Kennewick personnel. BC Van Horn and his shift are responsible for department issued uniforms and personal protective equipment.
BC Van Horn began his firefighting career with Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue in 1998, where he worked as an intern firefighter and attended the Fire Science program at Olympic College. In 2000 he was hired on as a Fire Fighter EMT with The Hanford Nuclear reservation where he worked until he started his career with the Kennewick Fire Department in 2001. BC Van Horn was promoted to Captain in 2015 and has worked numerous assignments throughout the department.
BC Van Horn has a B.S. in Fire Administration, A.S. in Fire Science, is an IFSAC Fire Officer II, Instructor II and a Washington State Hazardous Materials Technician. BC Van Horn has served on the department Apparatus Committee, Hazmat Team, as the Kennewick Fire Department Ground Ladder Subject Matter Expert and has had the opportunity to be an instructor during several regional recruit academies.
