Holiday shopping safety tips

Holiday Crime Risk

As a business owner, you know how profitable the holiday season can be. Along with an increase in sales activity, your risk may increase as well. Good customer service makes the difference between profit and loss, and goes a long way in preventing a crime. Making eye contact and acknowledging the presence of a customer is often all that is necessary to prevent shoplifting, a bad check, use of a fraudulent credit or debit card or even a robbery.  For more information on making this holiday season safer for your business, employees and customers, contact Kennewick Police Crime Prevention at (509) 582-1351.

Suspicious Business Fires

To combat the rise in fires at local businesses, officials are asking business owners to remove potential causes and increase prevention efforts.  In addition to fires started from discarded cigarettes in flower pots, storage and debris outside of businesses has been a target for arson this year.

  • Guard flower pots from becoming cigarette receptacles. The soil is highly flammable.
  • Remove combustible waste and debris; keep outside storage neat and orderly.
  • Keep storage and other infrequently visited areas secure.
  • Good lighting in outdoor areas reduces night-time activities.
  • Natural vegetation (shrubs/bushes) too close to buildings can be highly combustible, easily ignitable and often obstruct exits and egress windows if not regularly maintained. Dumpsters and trash containers must not be stored in buildings or placed within 5’ of combustible walls, openings or combustible roof eave lines.
